In a tragic and deeply disturbing incident, two firefighters were shot and killed, and a third was critically injured while responding to a wildfire in northern Idaho on Saturday, June 29. The attack, described by authorities as an “ambush,” took place on Canfield Mountain near Coeur d’Alene.
🔥 Fire Call Turns Deadly
What began as a routine response to a brush fire quickly turned into a nightmare. Firefighters were dispatched around 1:30 p.m. local time to tackle a blaze estimated to cover about 20 acres. Moments after arriving, they were fired upon by a lone gunman hidden nearby.
Two firefighters died on the scene. A third was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and has since undergone surgery. He is now reported to be in stable condition.
🚓 A Chilling Setup
Authorities believe the shooter deliberately started the fire to lure emergency responders into a trap. Sheriff Bob Norris of Kootenai County described it as a calculated “sniper-style ambush” using a high-powered rifle.
Law enforcement, including over 300 officers, FBI agents, helicopters, and SWAT units, swiftly responded. After securing the area, the suspect was found dead with a firearm nearby. It is still unclear whether he died by suicide or was killed in the confrontation.
The sheriff in Idaho made clear that if anyone gets a clear shot at the shooter/shooters attacking firefighters, they should take them out.

Though the shelter-in-place order has now been lifted, authorities have urged residents to avoid the Canfield Mountain area. The wildfire itself remains active but is under close watch. No additional suspects are believed to be involved, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
